WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto is still looking to secure an opponent for the fall. There were negotiations for a fight with Shane Mosley. Berto's request for a 50-50 split of the purse, according to Mosley, was a big problem with finalizing a deal. Mosley walked away from Berto and reached an agreement to fight Sergio Mora on September 18 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Berto doesn't believe his financial demand was the real reason Mosley made a decision to go with Mora. He believes Mosley watched his April destruction of Carlos Quintana and realized the safer option was Mora. To erase some of the negative vibes from his performance in the loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May, Berto says Mosley should have taken him on instead of opting to fight someone like Mora.
"I believe [it was the win over Quintana] because he was coming off of a loss, and he really shouldn't have been thinking too much on the money aspect. That's just my opinion. The way I would have come at it was that I was coming off of a loss and I would have just been hungry to come right back in there and to beat any and everybody. It didn't matter if they were going to pay me two dollars," Berto said.
An up and coming welterweight contender, Mike Jones, has challenged Berto in a few published interviews. Jones believes he will knock Berto out if the two welterweights were to meet in the ring. Berto is not jumping at the bait, stating that he barely knows Mike Jones.
"I've been hearing about this cat, Mike Jones, saying this and saying that, and I don't even know who he is. I haven't seen him fight and I don't know anything about him. Right now, at this point, I'm just trying to get in there and fight those big names that are going to be helping me to continue to climb up that ladder and to be making a bigger and better name for myself," Berto said.
"There are guys in the division that I just don't know too much about and the boxing world doesn't know too much about. I don't feel like fighting any of them is going to benefit me in any way. It's like, if I beat them, "Okay, so what?"
