In a bantamweight war, Ana Maria Torres won a close unanimous ten round decision over Jackie Nava to become the first female to capture the Diamond Belt of the World Boxing Council (WBC). The card was presented by HG Boxing Promotions and Zanfer at the Metropolitan Arena in Chiapas, Mexico. Earlier this year they fought to a close draw.
From the opening bell both fighters came out swinging to the cheers of the fans, who were divided. In the second round, Jackie was more effective in releasing powerful and quick combinations to the head of Torres. The third round was exciting with Jackie letting her hands go and busting up the nose of Torres. Midway through the fight, Torres began to take over and started to hurt Jackie with hard punches and making her legs wobble a few times.
In the tenth and final round, both of them went wild with big exchanges of punches. In a rushing attack, Ana Maria made Jackie stumble and go down, but referee Kenny Bayless rightly waved it off.
All three scores were 96-94 in favor of Torres.
Ana Maria Torres improved her record to 26 wins with 15 KOs, three defeats and three draws, while Jackie Nava goes down to 24 victories, with 11 before the deadline, four defeats and three draws.
