After WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan made an impressive American debut by stopping Paulie Malignaggi in the eleventh round of their bout at New York's Madison Square Garden, he was pushing to fight WBA-interim champion Marcos Maidana next.
A lot of boxing critics have been all over Khan for not picking Maidana for his American debut fight, especially since Maidana is the mandatory challenger. Instead he picked Malignaggi who is very minor puncher with only five knockouts on his record. Maidana is one of the biggest punchers at 140-pounds. Both of them are under Golden Boy Promotions. Khan wants to fight Maidana, and for Tim Bradley and Devon Alexander to fight each other, and then the two winners meet in a finals type of showdown with all of the major 140-pound titles on the line.
"He is a great fighter but we know how to beat Maidana. I'll put out a statement today. If Maidana wants to fight, let's have it next. A lot of people putting the pressure on me to fight Maidana. I'll fight Maidana next. Let Timothy Bradley and [Devon] Alexander fight each other and then face those guys in the finals. So it's like a semi-finals, me and Maidana and Alexander and Bradley. I'm not leaving 140-pounds until I unify the titles....until I'm number one," Khan said.
