British star Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) is ready to accept a fight with former three division world champion Adrien Broner (30-1, 22 KOs), but his focus is firmly placed on his next return, on May 29th against Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
The two fighters have been trading words for the last few weeks. Broner has continued to go after Khan on the social networks.
A member of Khan's team told the UK press that Broner was their first selection for the May date, but they claim Broner insisted on a catch-weight for the contest. Broner, a former welterweight champion, dropped down to 140-pounds after losing to Marcos Maidana in late 2013. Khan moved up to welterweight early last year and no intention of moving back down.
A source inside the Khan camp told Daily Mail: "Obviously the Broner one was a fight we really wanted before we decided on Algieri but despite a lot of talking from the Broner side they didn't seem to want to make it in the end. We didn't hear much from Broner's side in terms of getting it done."
"Amir is a 147-pounder, fully-fledged welterweight now and has no interest in dropping down to face anybody. But Adrien Broner is a fight Amir would love to take at any point and would be very confident of winning, wherever and whenever."
"Obviously Amir is scheduled to face Algeiri now and this seems like more talk from Broner. But let's hope it is something that can be done in the future."
