Undefeated lightweight prospect Amir Khan (17-0, 13KOs) will face Michael Gomez (35-8, 24KOs) on June 21 at the NIA, Birmingham. Initially it was thought to be former WBA junior welterweight champ Gavin Rees in either June or September, but now Rees appears to be the choice for Khan later in the year.
Gomez was announced as the opponent at a press conference in Birmingham. Khan is a heavy favorite, but Gomez is a hard-punching, tough fighter who will test Khan's will. Gomez is better known for his upset win over Alex Arthur in 2003 and some of his wild fights. He is a former WBU champion and tried winning his third British title last year from Carl Johanneson, but was stopped in the sixth-round.
