SAN Juan, Puerto Rico — Amanda Serrano had no issues making weight on Friday morning, but Reina Tellez wasn't able to cut down to the 126lbs limit.
Serrano, making her first defense of her unified featherweight titles in over two years, weighed in Friday morning at 125.6lbs for their fight at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Tellez, who stepped in on less than two weeks’ notice, wasn’t as lucky, requiring a privacy booth before checking in at 126.8lbs. Tellez had two hours, or until 11:39 a.m. local time to make the featherweight limit of 126lbs in order to make their featherweight fight official.
Tellez came back nearly two hours later, at 11:33 a.m., holding a plastic cup to spit in, but was only able to cut to 126.6lbs. Faced with the resignation of the situation, Tellez cracked open a grape flavored Gatorade, and will not be eligible to win the WBO or WBA belts that Serrano currently holds. Should Tellez lose, the WBO announced that their title would become vacant.
There will be no rehydration clause added to the contract, a Most Valuable Promotions official confirmed to BoxingScene.
Serrano responded to a post on social media, saying that she would not seek any compensation for Tellez missing the weight. She also didn't want Tellez to suffer the indignation of having to cut weight by cutting her hair.
"My team ain’t doing her like that. I’m not asking for anything. She’s a young lady. Don’t cut the hair. I’m not co-signing that. Give her more time or leave her alone. I’m not complaining," said Serrano, 47-4-1 (31 KOs).
Tellez, 13-0-1 (5 KOs), of San Antonio, Texas, has fought primarily as a junior featherweight and bantamweight, with her failure to make the weight hinting at her struggles cutting down on short notice.
The fight, which will headline a DAZN broadcast, is the first for the Puerto Rico-born Serrano on her home island since 2021, when she knocked out Daniela Bermudez in nine rounds.
Tellez, 15 years her opponent’s junior at 22, was to be fighting for her first world title, and in her first 10-round fight. The fight will be scheduled for 10 three-minute rounds.
A public weigh-in will take place later in the evening, at 7 p.m. local time, at the Coca-Cola Music Hall at Distrito T-Mobile in San Juan.
In the co-main event, both WBA titleholder Stephanie Han and Holly Holm came in at exactly the same weight, 134.8lbs, for their 10-round bout. Han, 11-0 (3 KOs), of El Paso, Texas will be making her second title defense, while Holm, a multiple time boxing champion and former UFC champion from Albuquerque, New Mexico, is seeking her first world title since she left the sport in 2013 to pursue mixed martial arts.
The 44-year-old Holm is aiming to make history as the first boxer to win a world title after being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
In eight-round action, former IBF bantamweight titleholder Ebanie Bridges, 9-2 (4 KOs), and Alexis Araiza Mones, 3-2-1 (1 KO), cleared the bantamweight limit, with Bridges coming in at 117.8lbs and Mones checking in at 116.6lbs.
Bridges, 39, of Australia is fighting for the first time since losing her world title in December of 2023 to Miyo Yoshida, while Mones, a 2021 National Golden Gloves champion from Fort Worth, Texas, is getting her first major assignment as a pro.
In other action, Yankiel Rivera, 7-0-1 (3 KOs), came in at 111.4lbs for his WBA interim flyweight title fight against former WBO junior flyweight champion Jonathan “Bomba” Gonzalez, 28-4-1 (14 KOs), who was 112lbs exactly. Rivera, 28, of Bayamon, Puerto Rico is getting his second straight opportunity at that belt after drawing with Angelino Cordova last August, while Gonzalez, 34, is fighting for the first time since his first round TKO loss to Anthony Olascuaga in October of 2024.
