Jose "Chepe" Reynoso, manager of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, says there is no debate on whether or not his boxer is more popular than WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Alvarez defends his WBC 154-pounds strap on Saturday in Guadalajara against mandatory challenger Ryan Rhodes. Not only does Reynoso believe Alvarez is more popular than Chavez in Mexico, he says the 21-year-old boxer is also winning the popularity war in America.
"Right now there is nobody like him in Mexico, and I say that because he has excellent technique, footwork and movements from the waist. In addition to being clean cut, looks at his face, he doesn't have a single scratch or scar, because he can defend very well [against punches]. That Saturday, we saw Julio Cesar fight at the Staples Center and he only sold 5000 tickets, and when Canelo fought at the Honda Center in Anaheim I went there and saw 12,000 fans," Reynoso said.
