In a shocker, boxing scribe Kevin Iole of the Las Vegas Journal Review reported that former world champion Rosendo Alvarez failed a post-fight urinalysis after testing positive for the diuretic Furosemide, also known as lasix. Alvarez had already lost a piece of his purse for failing to make the 112 pound weight limit for his April 8 bout against Jorge Arce, but denies taking the drug to make weight.
Alvarez claims a trainer gave him the pill in order to try and urinate, but later changed his story and said he took the pill to defecate.
Alvarez was suspended for the remainder of 2006 on Monday by the Nevada Athletic Commission and fined $2,000.
