It was reported by the Chicago Tribune that the August 4 bout between WBC lightweight champion David Diaz and Mexican legend Erik Morales will head to the
Allstate Arena.
Diaz, the former WBC interim champ, was granted full title status after Joel Casamayor refused fight him in a mandatory title defense. Morales, currenly riding a three fight losing streak, will be going for his fourth world title in his fourth weight class. Should he win, Morales would become the first Mexican fighter to win four major titles in four weight divisions. Diaz is not ready to go down with a serious fight. He sees Morales as his chance for the big time.
"It's a great feeling that the fight is going to be here," said Diaz to the Tribune. "Hopefully, this will make my longtime dream a reality. I can establish myself in boxing. I can gain credibility as a good fighter."
The undercard, put together by co-promoters Bob Arum of Top Rank and Dominic Pesoli of Chicago's Eight-Count Productions, appears to be solid.
Tentatively scheduled to fight on the undercard is undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Chicago super middleweights Donovan George and Michael Walker will see action in seperate bouts and as the co-feature, hard punching Ricardo Torres will defend his WBO junior welterweight title against mandatory challenger Kendall Holt.
