WBO interm junior middleweight champion Alfredo "El Perro" Angulo takes time out of training to talk to BoxingsScene.com about his upcoming fight with Joel Julio. The clash of two of the division's hardest hitters takes place on April 24th on HBO. Angulo talks about his training camp, keys to victory and a dream rematch with Kermit Cintron in this exclusive interview.
BoxingsScene.com: How is training going for your upcoming fight with Joel Julio?
Alfredo Angulo: Everything is going well. We are working hard and everything is going as scheduled.
BoxingsScene.com: When did you start training camp?
Alfredo Angulo: About three weeks ago or so.
BoxingsScene.com: So you are going to have a real long camp then.
Alfredo Angulo: Yes I am. I was on vacation for the holidays and I just got really back in the swing of things so we wanted more time to prepare. We added three weeks to the camp so I can get my conditioning back to where I want it.
BoxingsScene.com: Joel Julio is known for his power. What do you have to do to avoid the big shots?
Alfredo Angulo: Move my head (laughing). Now seriously we are working on my defense and working on countering off of his punches. We have a plan that should help minimize the damage he does. Defense is the key.
BoxingsScene.com: Did you study Julio's losses to James Kirkland and Sergiy Dzinziruk to see what they did to win their fights?
Alfredo Angulo: I was at the fight against Kirkland in San Jose. Kirkland is strong and I am strong so yeah I saw what he was able to do in that fight. Kirkland was able to land a lot of big shots on him.
BoxingsScene.com: You have the WBO interm title and Sergiy Dzinziruk has the regular title. Is a showdown with him in the works?
Alfredo Angulo: I would love to fight for his title. It is something I am interested in but I think he had problems with his manager or promoter or something. He hasn't fought in a while.
BoxingsScene.com: I think his problems with promoter have been ironed out.
Alfredo Angulo: I don't really know. If he wants the fight and if Gary (Shaw) makes the fight I will be more than happy to fight him. You know me Ryan I will fight anyone they put in front of me.
BoxingsScene.com: Erislandy Lara made comments after his win over Grady Brewer that you wouldn't fight him. He said no one that is a contender will fight him. I spoke to your promoter Gary Shaw about it and he laughed it off saying why would he want to have you fight a guy who was 9-0 at the time. He said you are past that position and basically it is a waste of time. What do you think about that?
Alfredo Angulo: Who has Erislandy Lara fought? I have heard some things about that. I read that De la Hoya said I was scared to fight Lara as well. I just laughed at that. He can say whatever he wants. I will fight whoever they put in front of me but really a fight against Lara is a step backwards for me and not forward.
BoxingsScene.com: I recently interviewed Vanes Martirosyan and he said he would love to fight you as well. What do you think of the fact that now you seem to be a person a lot of the division wants to fight?
Alfredo Angulo: They can call out my name that is okay. All they have to do is talk to Gary (Shaw). He is in charge of making the fights. I will fight any of them.
BoxingsScene.com: You can take it as a complement that you are well known in boxing now and they want to fight you because they know it will be a high profile fight. They want to try to beat you to move ahead in their careers.
Alfredo Angulo: Yeah that is true but look at it this way. If I fight and beat Lara what does it do for me? Nothing. I am not scared of any of these guys. I want to fight big fights and fight for titles. I want fights with guys with bigger names that are well known.
BoxingsScene.com: Who do you think wins between Paul Williams and Kermit Cintron?
Alfredo Angulo: Paul Williams I think. Cintron isn't as good as him.
BoxingsScene.com: I know we have spoke about this before but is the Cintron rematch still the fight you want the most?
Alfredo Angulo: I would love that fight. Whenever he wants to fight me I will fight him. It doesn't matter when or where. If he said lets jump in the ring right now I would to fight him now. He doesn't seem too interested in the fight though. I know the promoters have to make the fight but he has to agree to it too. I just train and whatever name they give me to fight I fight them.
BoxingsScene.com: How does it feel to be finally fighting back in Southern California again?
Alfredo Angulo: I am very happy to fight here in again. I have fought close by in Pechanga but this is the first time I am fighting so close (Ontario, CA) in a long time. I think the fights away from here helped other fans get to know me better but I really want to fight in front of the people here. Let the local people see the Perro fight.
BoxingsScene.com: Has your team told you what they have planned for you after this fight?
Alfredo Angulo: If everything goes well as planned after the fight I will buy a piece of bread and drink a glass of milk, enjoy it and then go right back to the gym. I will get back to training. I always have a piece of bread afterwards and a glass of milk (laughing) after I fight. In all seriousness we will wait till after this fight to talk about future plans.
BoxingsScene.com: Do you have a message for the fans?
Alfredo Angulo: Like I always say Ryan and you already know what I will say. When ever the fans see the name Alfredo "El Perro" Angulo on any fight card you know it will be a great show. I think that in this fight coming up with Joel Julio it couldn't be more true. Julio is a physical fighter and a knockout artist and I am a fighter who likes to be in front of you at all times as well but I am more of a boxer than knockout artist and I think it will be a great fight.
