Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo has one of the toughest tests of his career ahead of him as he’ll tangle with Cuban Erislandy Lara on June 8th at the Home Depot Center in an interesting Junior Middleweight bout. The stakes are high for both Angulo and Lara who need a victory in order to continue their ultimate goal to be in title contention in a deep 154 pound division.
It’s no secret Angulo is a very aggressive come forward fighter who likes to pressure his opponents. Lara is quite the opposite as he’s of the Cuban pedigree where pure boxing and counterpunching are the keys to success.
Angulo was on the most recent edition of BoxingScene Radio and spoke about fighting an opponent with Lara’s style. While many expect Lara to box and move in the fight, Angulo feels Lara needs to do more and make a fight if he wants to prove to the fans he’s the best.
“I know Lara has the style that all the Cubans have but honestly Lara says he’s one of the best and wants to fight the best and if he really wants to show the boxing world that he’s a good fighter, he has to come forward because the boxing the Cubans do of just boxing and counterpunching, I don’t think it’s a style the people or the public likes. Simply it’s a style that doesn’t sell. So it’s going to be a decision for Lara to make; if he really wants to show the people what he’s made of or if he just want to come out and play his games the night” Angulo would tell BoxingScene Radio.
Lara’s style isn’t the most fan friendly as it doesn’t produce much action but it’s proven to be effective in both the amateur and professional rankings. Cuban fighters have a deep history of being fundamentally sound fighters and their amateur program is second to none. Lara is also a product of the Cuban system but Angulo feels Lara needs to put on better performances as his last outings have not been well received by the boxing public and he is a tough sell.
“Honestly [Lara’s] previous fight with him and Vanes [Martirosyan], I expected so much more from Vanes and [Lara]. It turned out to be honestly a very boring fight because of the fight they put on. They would tie and hold every round and neither guy looked good. Lara is coming off a fight where he was very elusive and he didn’t convince the people and the people didn’t like it. Now he needs to demonstrate to himself and demonstrate to the people that he’s a good fighter for professional boxing” said Angulo.
While we are yet to see what kind of fight Lara decides to fight on June 8th, Angulo promises to put on a show that his fans have become accustomed to seeing whenever he fights.
