BoxingScene spoke to former Contender series participant Alfonso Gomez (22-4-2) about his upcoming fight versus Calvin Green (21-5-1).  Gomez has been out of the ring since defeating Jose Luis Castillo in March of 2010 via TKO.  In this exclusive interview Gomez talks about the keys to victory, his future plans, the fight he almost had versus Chavez Jr. and more.

BoxingScene:  What do you is going to be the key your fight on Saturday versus Calvin Green?

Alfonso Gomez:  The key to victory is not giving him his distance since I've seen only one tape of him and on that tape he always comes forward and tries to get into a close range fight.  I love fighting on the inside, but I've also been working on keeping my distance and I my game plan includes a lot of counter punching.

BoxingScene: It will be about 14 months since your last fight when you stopped Jose Luis Castillo. I know you were in training late last year for a fight against Chavez Jr. but are you worried about ring rust?

Alfonso Gomez:  I'm not worried about anything.  The only concern I have is coming out of this fight without any injuries or cuts because I plan to return to the ring as soon as possible.  14 month of inactivity is detrimental for any boxer's career, so I plan on recouping lost time.

BoxingScene:  When we last spoke you were preparing for the Chavez fight and you were injured in camp. Do you still want a fight with Chavez down the road?

Alfonso Gomez:  No, I don't care about him anymore.  He can make a fool of himself and of the sport at his own weight.  I'm a welterweight who plans on making the sport and the Mexican people proud.

BoxingScene: Being that you live in the LA area I'm sure you will see his fight vs Sebastian Zbik. Do you think he wins that fight and even though you said you are welterweight would you be willing to move up to 160 to face him should he win?  In December you were scheduled to face him at 157.

Alfonso Gomez:  I dont' know about him winning that fight but Sulaiman, Top Rank and the judges will give him the win bu like I said, I don't care about him.

BoxingScene:  Speaking of moving up in weight, Calvin Green usually fights at 154 pounds. What weight is this fight set at and are you planning a future move to junior middleweight or is this a one time deal?

Alfonso Gomez:  This fight will be at 150.  I'm weighing in at 149 so I'm definitely a 147 pound fighter.  Like I said I am a welterweight but yes, I would try junior middleweight if it's against Canelo (Alvarez) or if it is a title fight.
Boxingscene: What is the plan after this fight? Are you looking to go into a big fight after this or would you prefer another tune up since you have been out of the ring so long?

Alfonso Gomez:  What ever my promoter Bob Arum says but most definitely I want to be back up in the ring soon after.

BoxingScene:  How is your music career progressing?

Alfonso Gomez:  Music is fantastic.  Hy3rid H3 (his group) just finished 4th place in a National Competition hosted by T-Mobile, Samsung, and the New Sidekick 4G.  I just wish I had more time and energy to focus on it as much as in boxing.  However, I love every second of it and I'm happy at that we've worked into a national level.  Hy3rid H3 - La Mejor Musica Urbana Mexicana.  Check us out at  www.Hy3rid.com

BoxingScene: How do you balance both when you are in training camp? Does music have to go on the back burner during training camp or do you till find time to work on it?

Alfonso Gomez:  That's one of the unfortunate things in life. He who serves two masters always neglects one and I've devoted my time and energy to boxing more than music.  However, whenever I have the opportunity I give music all my love and attention because it's a great passion of mine.  I've had to find a balance but more importantly I had to find my priorities.

BoxingScene:  Do you have a message for the fans out there?

Alfonso Gomez:  I just want to give them my love back since they have shown true support through good times and bad times.  All the messages I receive on Facebook, Myspace, Youtube and my personal website GoBoxMe.com have really helped me to be patient through this 14 months of nothing....So now, I'm ready to make noise again and want to welcome them to continue their support by signing in to my social networks and the music too.  Please check out my personal sight www.GoBoxMe.com and my group's site www.Hy3rid.com.  Blessing to all and thank you also Ryan.  You've always done great interviews and have taken the time to interview me before every one of my fights.  Blessings to you too.
