Two-time Olympic gold medalist and one of the most accomplished amateur fighters ever, Alexey Tischenko, announced his upcoming retirement from boxing to the Russian media.
"It's time to call it a day - I'm feeling it. I'm done with boxing", said the fighter to a local media outlet.
Tischenko, still only 26, broke onto the world scene in 2004 by winning a featherweight gold medal at Athens Olympics. He followed it up with the first place at 2005 world championship and the silver medal at 2007 Chicago world championship. He got his second Olympic gold medal, now at the lightweight limit, in Beijing in 2008. Unfortunately, the latest part of his career was marred with injuries and long periods of inactivity, which prevented him from competing for his third Olympic gold.
An official announcement is expected on Friday.
