Devon Alexander "The Great" took time out of his post fight celebration party last night to give BoxingsScene.com his thoughts his TKO victory over Juan Urango. Alexander (who now has the junior welterweight IBF strap to go with his WBC strap) started out strong in the fight easily winning the first four rounds. He then withstood a Urango assault in the middle rounds and ended the fight in resounding fashion with a right upper cut that he said they had worked on all of training camp. See what Alexander The Great had to say about the fight and what he wants to do next in this exclusive interview.
BoxingsScene.com: Congratulations on the victory. Give us your thoughts on the fight.
Devon Alexander: Oh man I just want to thank God first of all for the victory. The fight was good. I set out to execute a game plan that me and my coach Kevin had and we knew what Juan Urango was going to do and bring to the table. We were prepared for that.
BoxingsScene.com: Were you surprised at all that the knockout came in the 8th round?
Devon Alexander: Not really. We worked so tremendously hard and the uppercut that I knocked him out with we definitely were working on it the whole camp. We worked on the left hand and the uppercut because we knew he was going to be leaning forward and we knew that he was going to leaning in and be wide open. We had been working on that the whole camp.
BoxingsScene.com: Urango threw a lot of wide punches. It seemed early on you were able to dodge a lot of them but that you hadn't quite got the timing down 100% to really make him pay. Were you just biding your time waiting for your opening?
Devon Alexander: Yes. We worked on that too. We knew he was going to throw a lot of hooks. I guess that is his favorite punch. We knew he was going to throw a lot of those. We were prepared for it and we just were ready mentally. We had tremendous sparring partners in Vegas who were throwing a lot of hooks and coming forward so we were prepared for everything he did. I said that in the pre-fight press conference that we knew what he was going to do.
BoxingsScene.com: In the first round you started out strong but towards the end of the round he landed some power shots on you. Everybody watching HBO saw your trainer Kevin Cunningham telling you to stick to the plan and not let him touch you. Were you just trying to see gauge the strength of his punches?
Devon Alexander: I did want to feel him out a little bit and I am not going to lie to you. Believe me this is no lie. He didn't hurt me at all. I didn't feel his punches at all. If he caught me with a good punch or if I felt a good punch from Urango I would say so. To be honest I don't see how he knocked all those guys out because I didn't feel a thing.
BoxingsScene.com: I had you wining the first 4 rounds and then Urango came on in the fifth and sixth and then it swung back your way in the seventh. Were you pacing yourself in the middle rounds or what happened there?
Devon Alexander: Well yeah my coach told me to calm down. My coach said I was getting a little anxious. In the second round I caught him with an uppercut that made his nose bleed and I saw blood. My coach knows that when I see blood that I want to go in there and do more damage. He told me to calm down and that is what I did. We settled down and got back to boxing.
BoxingsScene.com: What kind of statement do you think you made tonight?
Devon Alexander: I thought I made a big statement. Urango fought Randall Bailey and Bailey dropped him but couldn't finish him. All the other guys like Ricky Hatton and Berto didn't knock him out but I did so that says a lot for me. I am still learning. I am just 23 years old. I am just a student of the game and I am interested in keeping learning. Each fight you will see me get better. I love what I do and this is my job.
BoxingsScene.com: What did you think of Zab Judah jumping in the ring during your post fight interview?
Devon Alexander: You know he is just trying to make a statement. He is trying to get in the mix so he is doing what he got to do. If he wants to come to St. Louis and take a shot he can do that. Bradley or whoever else can come and fight me.
BoxingsScene.com: If you could name your next opponent right now who would it be?
Devon Alexander: It doesn't matter. Like I said God is guiding my career. Kevin and Don (King) are picking the guys we are in the ring next with so I leave it up to them and go from there. Whoever I fight I am going to the lab which is the gym and I am going to study him and we will have a game plan for them and we will execute it.
BoxingsScene.com: Last question so you can get back to the party. Do you have a message for the fans?
Devon Alexander: I appreciate all the fans. Last time I was on BoxingsScene.com I told you I would be a unified champ and here I am the unified champ. I appreciate all the support all of my fans gave me. Look for me in the future to become undisputed champ and on the pound for pound best in the world list. I also want to thank you Ryan for all the articles and interviews and for filming my training.
