Former Italian lightweight and junior welterweight champion Alessandro Scapecchi has passed away at the age of 66 after a long battle with leukemia.

Scapecchi challenged for the European title three times only to come up short every time. The losses, however, came in good company: Patrizio Oliva, just before he became WBA junior welterweight title champion, outpointed Scapecchi over 12 rounds in 1985; later that year he would lose to  future IBF boss Terry Marsh in six rounds; and in 1987 Tex Nkanlankete also halted Scapecchi in the sixth.

Amongst his best wins were victories over the likes of then future EBU champ Lucio Cusma and Argentinian veteran Juan Jose Gimenez in a fight for the national super lightweight title.

Scapecchi fought professionally from1980 through to 1987 and was throughout his 33-7-2 (14 KOs) career promoted by the Cavini family. He remained part of the team as a trainer in retirement.
