Alejandro Luna (8-0) recently spoke to BoxingScene about his upcoming fight against Jose Mendoza (7-4) that takes place this Friday at the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa in Cabazon, California. The fight takes place on the Kendall Holt versus Tim Coleman undercard that serves as as tonight's ESPN Friday Night Fights main event. The 20-year-old Gary Shaw promoted fighter also speaks about his training camp, career plans and more in this BoxingScene interview.
BoxingScene.com: We are a few days away from your upcoming fight versus Jose Mendoza. How is training camp going?
Alejando Luna: Training camp is going great. We have been sparring with the likes of Jose "El Gato" Roman, who is signed with Top Rank and Jose Cepeda who is another up and comer at 140 pounds. We have been having great sparring sessions and we are training hard. Everything has been going great so far.
BoxingScene.com: Do you know much about Mendoza?
Alejandro Luna: Actually we don't know much about him. We know he is from Mexico and we expect a tough kid from out there and we are ready to see what happens. We are excited.
BoxingScene.com: I understand that your fight is the first swing bout and that there is a good chance that it will be shown on ESPN Friday Night Fights. I would imagine you are pretty excited about the prospect of being on national television.
Alejandro Luna: I am very excited. It is a chance to showcase my talent on national television. Hopefully those other fights get over with quick (laughing). It would be nice to fight on ESPN.
BoxingScene.com: You grew up in California and all of your fights so far have been in California. You must enjoy the chance to fight so close to your family and friends so they can come out and support you live.
Alejandro Luna: It feels great to have the support from back home. I mean to have all of my family, friends and fans come out there to support you is an awesome experience. Hopefully as time goes on and we get more experience and get out there a little more that our following will grow. We are just excited about everything.
BoxingScene.com: What fighters did you look up to as you came up through the amateurs?
Alejandro Luna: I looked up to a lot of fighters. I liked De la Hoya, Barrera and many others. And of course like probably all Mexican-Americans I really looked up to Julio Cesar Chavez.
BoxingScene.com: Any final thoughts in closing? Do you have anything to say to the fans who haven't seen you fight before?
Alejandro Luna: I want to thank all of the fans and everyone who has followed me for their support. For all the fans who haven't seen me, I hope they tune in to ESPN Friday Night Fights this week and hopefully they will show my fight. I have a crowd pleasing style and I think they will enjoy the fight.
