Hall of Fame Boxing announcer Al Bernstein cites the welterweight clash between Errol Spence and Terrance Crawford as being “near the top of the list” of big fights he’s announced.
Bernstein will be on the broadcast team for the Saturday, July 29 Showtime PPV, which starts at 8PM Eastern/5PM Pacific.
Both boxers are undefeated - and the winner will walk away as the undisputed world champion at 147-pounds.
Bernstein has announced over 150 pay-per-view telecasts including Marvin Hagler vs. Tommy Hearns and Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao. Al called Spence-Crawford a huge fight for boxing.
“Boxing often has some big match that the mainstream sports media is banging the drum for and if the fight doesn’t get made it is held up as a sign boxing can’t make big matches. This was one of those fights—but now it’s not because it is happening on July 29. It features two fighters who are fighting at the top of their game in what seems to me to be a dead even match-up," Bernstein said.
Bernstein offered his analysis of the fight and tabbed it as a true 50-50 encounter where either boxer can come away with the victory.
“In the dictionary next to the phrase boxer-puncher you will see Terrance Crawford’s photo. He embodies that title. He has great skills from both the right handed and left-hand stances. He has good movement and very good power especially as a counter puncher. Errol Spence is a relentless attacker who may be one of the best body punchers in the sport. He has every punch in his arsenal and he is hard to deter in the ring," Bernstein said.
"In this fight Crawford wants to control the geography of the ring and keep distance as much as possible. He hopes to catch Spence coming forward with a powerful counter. Spence would like to be inside where his body work can make a difference. I think a key in this fight is how well Spence can use his jab to work his way inside. There are so many scenarios that are plausible for this fight. It could be tactical in spots and a firefight in others. At the end of the day it is a true 50-50 match and that’s one of the reasons so many are anxiously awaiting July 29th.”
