Adrien Broner helped lend credence to the rumors of a potentially stacked May 4 pay-per-view telecast.

The unbeaten lightweight titlist is good friends with pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr., who is confirmed to return to the ring on May 4 against an opponent to be determined. The very short list of candidates includes Robert Guerrero and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. Most believe that it will be Guerrero, with Alvarez fighting in a separate co-main event on the card to help drum up interest for a possible showdown later in the year.

Broner’s name has been mentioned for placement in supporting capacity on the undercard, even suggested by Mayweather in a video that saw the two casually talk shop over a meal. The conversation never seemed to pick up much steam, especially with Broner still slated to face former 140 lb. titlist, Wales’ Gavin Rees on HBO next month at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The bout marks the first defense of the lightweight belt Broner snatched from Antonio DeMarco in one-sided fashion last November, which took place at the same venue as next month’s fight. The spacing between fights is a mere three months, roughly the same turnaround required to prepare for a May 4 showing in Las Vegas.

Of course, there are several matters to sort out. Mayweather’s opponent will likely be announced by then, if not in the next few days. The undercard has plenty of time to be sorted out, which means the event handlers can take a wait-and-see approach until February 16.

Broner remains focused on the task at hand, which is getting past Rees, who fights for the first time in the United States. That said, he also doesn’t at all rule out the possibility of fighting on the same card as his fighting friend.

“With Adrien Broner, anything is possible,” Broner acknowledged when pressed for the subject during a recent media conference call to otherwise promote his Feb. 16 fight. "I don’t get hit that much and my fights don’t last that long. I got speed and I have power in both hands. It only takes one mistake for it to be over – and that goes for me and for him.  

"That said, If I do come out of this fight untouched, there is a great possibility I will be on that May 4 card.
