It wasn't even close to the most significant fight of the night featuring fighters of Mexican and Filipino descent. That never stopped Adrian Estrella from living up to his name, shining like a star in stopping Jose Maxian of the Philippines in the third round of their super featherweight bout Saturday evening in Monterrey, Mexico.
Word must've not made its way south of the border of the blockbuster event taking place at the same time in Macua. More than 5,000 fans poured into Arena Solidaridad in Monterrey to lend their support to the unbeaten Estrella, who didn't disappoint in his Televisa-televised headliner.
In just three years as a pro, Estrella has scored knockouts in a variety of ways, but with every fight ending the same - with all of his opponents failing to hear the final bell. The same played out for Maxian, who was overwhelmed from the start and never a match for the power-punching prospect.
The ending came in round three and in violent fashion. A left hook crashed down on Maxian's chin, putting him down for the full ten count.
Estrella improves to 15-0 (15KO), with the win capping a brilliant 2013 campaign that saw the free-swinging prospect score six knockouts in as many fights.
Maxian falls to 9-3 (7KO) with the loss, snapping a modest two-fight win streak. The bout marked his first trip outside of Asia.
