Given his movie star looks and acting chops, it’s only fitting that pretty boy Adrian Estrella returns the ring on Valentine’s Day. The unbeaten super featherweight headlines a February 14 show in Los Mochis, Mexico, as he faces Philippines’ Adones Aguelo in a 12-round regional title fight.
The bout will air live on Televisa in Mexico.
Esrella (20-0, 18KOs) enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2014, officially making the transition from prospect to budding contender. The 23-year old was extended the distance for the first time in his career—in fact in back-to-back fights—but proved his worth on both occasions in taking clear-cut decision wins over Dante Jardon and former two-division champ Celestino Caballero.
The latter bout took place on the undercard of Jhonny Gonzalez’ mercy stoppage of legendary countryman Jorge Arce last October, a show that drew 20,000 in attendance and was watched in nearly 28 million homes.
Overall, Estrella scored five wins in 2014. He ended the year with a 1st round knockout of Puerto Rican journeyman Edwin Lopez last December.
Aguelo (23-10-2, 15KOs) comes in riding a two-fight win streak, scoring back-to-back knockouts in stay busy fights late in 2014. The 26-year old has come up short in two previous trips to Mexico—both of which came in 2014, dropping decisions to Nery Saguilan and Sergio ‘Yeyo’ Thompson.
Also on the show, former two-division champ Hugo Cazares (40-8-2, 27KOs) takes on countryman Joksan Hernandez (24-7-2, 16KOs) in a featherweight bout. Cazares has not fought since a 2nd round knockout loss to Carl Frampton last April in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Hernandez comes in on the heels of a 10-round draw with Sergio Lopez last December.
