Bantamweight contender Abner Mares appeared on BoxingScene.com's radio show, "The Boxing Lab" yesterday and spoke on variety of topics. Mares faces IBF champion Joseph Agbeko on August 13th for Agbeko's title and to determine the winner of Showtime's bantamweight tournament. Mares defeated Vic Darchinyan and Agbeko defeated Yonnhy Perez in the tournament's semi-finals.
Mares, who is known as a brawler said that he would like to show the world that he also has the ability to out box his opponents.
"I am a brawler. I can get in there and trade punches but I think it is time to show people the skills that Abner Mares has. We want to put on a showOn August 13th," said Mares.
Mares fought at super bantamweight early in his career. The fighter of Mexican descent revealed that down the road he is looking to move back up to the 122 pound division.
"If you look at my record, my first seven or eight fights were at super bantamweight. Let's get past this fight and see what happens. I definitely plan on moving back up at some point."
Fans and media alike have been clamoring for a showdown between the Agbeko-Mares winner and WBC/WBO champion Nonito Donaire. Mares said that while he is interested in that fight, his focus is solely on Joseph Agbeko.
"Agbeko is tough. We don't know what style to prepare for (answering co-host Luis Sandoval's question. Sandoval mentioned that Agbeko is cable of fighting with different styles). Like you said he takes punches. We know we can hit him. Right now we are focusing on agbeko and not Donaire."
