Former three division world champion Abner Mares (26-1-1, 14KOs) wants to take a vacation and spend some time with his family before returning to the ring. On Saturday, he was knocked out in the first round by Jhonny Gonzalez after getting clipped by a big left and then dropped twice before the referee waved the fight off. There is a rematch clause and Mares does have the option of facing Gonzalez next, but it appears that he might take a few months to relax before going in that direction.
"He beat me. He was the better man. When I got up I wasn't hurt in my head, but legs were not there. I'm just going to go back to the drawingboard. I'll fight anybody, I'm not here to take an easy fight just because I got knocked out. I'm here to fight. Losing...this is a learning experience and I'm going to learn from it. I want to see my family, that's the most important thing to me. I've had tough fight after tough fight and I think I deserve a vacation now," Mares said.
