WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14KOs) wants the best fights possible, at featherweight or even super featherweight and super bantamweight. Mares feels good at 126-pounds and would likely move up for a better opportunity at 130, but there are two boxers that he would drop down for, at 122, - WBA/WBO champion Guillermo Ridgondeax (12-0, 8KOs) and former champion Nonito Donaire. Last month Rigondeaux won a twelve round decision over Donaire.
"I want to give good fights and wherever there are good fights is where I'll be, either at super featherweight, featherweight, and I'm even willing to go down to super bantamweight again to face either Nonito Donaire or Guillermo Rigondeaux. Wherever I am offered a good fight, I'll be there," said Mares.
"I am aware that styles make fights, Nonito tried to decipher the style of Rigondeaux. If I get the opportunity, I know that I can beat Rigondeaux. I think right now Nonito is more interested in a fight [with me] than he was before, because now I'm the champion and he's not. He lost, and people know that I was asking for that fight."
