Trainer Abel Sanchez is on his daily grind at the Summit Gym in Big Bear with his various boxers but in due time, his best known client, WBA/IBF/IBO middleweight, Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) will be walking through his doors to get back to work as they embark on their 2016 campaign.
"In talking to Tom (Loeffler, Managing Director of K2 Promotions) he was talking about some time in April, he's going to fight," explained the veteran trainer last week to BoxingScene.com.
"I don't like for him to be in the gym for more than eight, nine weeks. So when they give me a date, he'll be here eight-to-nine weeks."
It is hoped that after this next fight that a showdown with WBC middleweight belt-holder Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez will take place in the second half of the upcoming year. The WBC has mandated that both sides negotiate this fight after their upcoming bouts. Regardless, Sanchez says he expects Golovkin to remain the consummate professional.
"I've been with him sixteen, seventeen fights, every time he comes to camp he comes in at '69, '70(pounds). So I imagine it will be the same. We've had some time off before, when his father died he came in at '70. So I have no doubt he'll be in camp at the right weight."
Golovkin last fought on October 17th at the Madison Square Garden in New York where he stopped David Lemieux in eight rounds.
