Kieran Farrell Suffers a Brain Bleed But on The Mend

Kieran Farrell is being kept in hospital overnight after collapsing in the ring following his English lightweight title defeat to former British champion Anthony Crolla at Manchester's Bowler's Arena; Farrell lost the 10-round fight by unanimous decision. The Heywood-based boxer started brightly and his high work rate worked in his favour in the early going. Crolla, though, landed the better quality punches in a fight that was keenly fought, but swung in the 26-year-old's favour after the fourth round and it stayed that way despite Farrell's all-out attacks.

Former British champion Gary Sykes (22-3, 5 KOs) put forth a strong performance, but it wasn't enough to defeat unbeaten Terry Flannigan (18-0, 4 KOs), who continues to rise by winning the Prizefighter Lightweight Tournament at Olympia in Liverpool, Merseyside. The scores were close, with a split verdict - 29-28 for Flannigan, 29-28 for Sykes and 29-28 for Flannigan. Sykes gets a small measure of redemption after Gary Buckland blew him away in 45 seconds of the first round in a 2010 Prizefighter tournament. Flannigan simply outworked Sykes, not by much, but enough to squeeze out a win on the cards.

Gallagher Confident Crolla Will Get Glory at Prizefighter

By Adam Norman Trainer Joe Gallagher is confident Anthony Crolla can use Prizefighter as a platform for further title glory this weekend. Crolla is one of the main draws in the latest instalment of the eight-man event, featuring some of the best lightweights in the UK. The 25-year-old is on the comeback trail after losing the British title to Derry Mathews - whom he could face in Saturday's final - earlier this year. Gallagher took his brightest talents to the famous Wild Card gym in LA recently and the trip gave Crolla the spark he needed. "Crolla's had time to come away, let his injuries heal," he told Sky Sports. "He's had good training at the Wild Card and that was a good confidence builder. "He sparred some good kids over there, and it gave him a lot of belief and confidence. "The Mathews defeat was a bit of a car-crash, and as such it takes a bit of time to get over it. But the Wild Card experience brought him back and we've had around 16 sparring partners before Prizefighter to keep the variety going."

Mathews ripped the British title from Crolla in Oldham in April and the draw for Saturday’s action threw up the chance for revenge for the Manchester man as the pair landed in separate halves of the draw. The lads from Gallagher’s Gym are no different and this week Anthony Crolla, Scott Cardle, Liam Smith, Paul Smith, Callum Johnson, Callum Smith, Scott Quigg and head coach Joe Gallagher jetted off to Los Angeles for a couple of weeks in the sun. Don’t expect to be hearing tales of rowdy nights on the Sunset Strip or lazy days strolling up and down Santa Monica’s famous 3rd Street Promenade though; Gallagher has more of a Busman’s holiday in mind for his charges.
