By Nick Halling - British boxing history could be made this weekend when Liam Smith aims to become domestic light middleweight champion with a victory over Erick Ochieng. If Smith prevails, he will join elder brothers Paul and Stephen as British champions. It is believed that never in the long history of the Lonsdale belt have there been three brothers reigning simultaneously. Liam is the third of four boxing brothers from the city of Liverpool. Paul recently regained the domestic super middleweight title, former featherweight boss Stephen is now a two-weight champion after knocking out Gary Buckland to win the super featherweight strap, while younger brother Callum has been garnering attention for a string of five first round knockouts.

Anthony Crolla certainly knows a thing a two about the domestic lightweight division. The Manchester entertainer has compiled a superb ledger containing excellent names such as Willie Limond, Kieran Farrell, and Gavin Rees. Perhaps the name Crolla is fondly remembered for is his Liverpool rival, Derry Mathews, as the pair shared two fantastic brawls in what was a classic modern rivalry. With Mathews’ immediate focus on Driffield’s Curtis Woodhouse, Crolla fully believes that September 21st showdown will provide plenty of explosions.

The art of pugilism, as Howard Cosell once said, “Is chillingly simple: One man purposefully endeavors to inflict bodily harm on another man”. The practice of Bikram Yoga, a 90 minute series of Hatha Yoga postures performed in a room heated to 40C, aims: “To deliver total health through the balancing and strengthening of every system in the body.” At first glance, the two practices seem unlikely bedfellows. And yet an increasing number of Britain’s top boxers have begun to incorporate Bikram Yoga into their training regimes. “It’s a mad Ying and Yang mix,” said Denton Vassell, Commonwealth Welterweight Champion, when speaking to BoxingScene about Yoga. “But it fits as one.”

Anthony Crolla will set his sights on Ricky Burns' world title if he pulls off a surprise win over Gavin Rees. Crolla and Rees are due to meet in a bill-topping lightweight clash at the Bolton Arena on June 29, and the Mancunian will enter the ring in front of the Sky Sports cameras as an underdog. Rees is a former world champion who fought for the WBC belt as recently as February, and Crolla is careful not to look beyond an opponent with a better head-to-head record against common rival Derry Mathews.
