When the covid-19 coronavirus pandemic is finally contained and boxing and other sports are resumed, former WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr. has an ambitious goal. That goal is to recapture all of his titles that he lost to Anthony Joshua in their December rematch.
Whenever boxing resumes and Ruiz fights again it will be with a different trainer in his corner. After the loss to Joshua, Ruiz dropped veteran trainer Manny Robles Jr. who had also guided him to his upset victory over Joshua in June.
Canelo Alvarez's trainer Eddy Reynoso spoke to ESPN Deportes reporter Salvador Rodriguez earlier this week and told him that he would be interested in training Ruiz, who is the first fighter of Mexican descent to become a heavyweight champion.
In an Instragram Live session with WBA president Gilberto Mendoza, Ruiz confirmed that he is very interested in working with Reynoso, whose stable of fighters also includes Oscar Valdez, Ryan Garcia, heavyweight prospect Frank Sanchez and others.
"We're talking with Canelo's team. I think that would be a good one for me to join if we got that way. Right now there hasn't been any contact but I would like to go over there with Canelo," Ruiz stated.
ESPN Deportes had previously stated that talks between Ruiz's camp and Reynoso have been paused as both the United States and Mexico battle the pandemic.
