Andrew Moloney has been given a clean bill of health.
The 29-year old from Australia suffered the unkindest of American debuts, enduring his first career defeat and the end of his brief secondary title reign in a grueling 12-round loss to Joshua Franco. Their ESPN-televised bout—which aired Tuesday evening live from MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas—left Moloney dizzy and nauseous which earned him a trip to nearby University Medical Center where he was held for observation before being released overnight.
“He is out of the hospital now,” Tony Tolj, Moloney’s career-long manager told BoxingScene.com. “[Tuesday] just wasn’t his night, but is now released from the hospital.”
The symptoms experienced by Moloney (21-1, 14KOs) were attributed to suffering two perforated eardrums over the course of 12 grueling rounds of action. Franco (17-1-2, 8KOs) clinched the fight over the course of the last four rounds which he swept, and where he outlanded Moloney 103-50 in total punches over that stretch according to Compubox.
Shortly after suffering his first defeat, Moloney made his way back to the dressing room where he began to feel ill. ESPN’s Bernardo Osuna reported onsite that the boxer was responsive and alert as he was taken out on a stretcher and transported to UMC for further observation.
As he recovers from the defeat and the damage sustained, Moloney will remain in town as an interested observer for the next ESPN event. Thursday’s show from the same venue will feature his twin brother, Jason Moloney (20-1, 17KOs) in a 10-round bantamweight bout versus Mexico’s Leonardo Baez, a late replacement for Colombia’s Oscar Negrete.
The pair of bouts featuring the Moloney brothers this week have been considered among the most competitive on paper for among the current closed doors series taking place on ESPN.
