World Boxing Association (WBA) "regular" featherweight champion Abner Mares is very hungry to get back in the ring with Leo Santa Cruz, who holds the WBA "super" featherweight beltholder. The two boxers will be involved in a televised doubleheader on October 14th. Mares will take on Andres Gutierrez on the card, which takes place at the StubHub Center in California. And in Santa Cruz will face Chris Avalos in the main event.
This isn’t what Abner Mares wanted, but he understands that Leo Santa Cruz is the ‘A’ side in their business equation. Mares would’ve preferred to fight Santa Cruz again October 7 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, the option that they had long discussed. Santa Cruz feels he needs to shed some ring rust, though, which is why Mares and Santa Cruz will face separate opponents on October 14 at StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Abner Mares is not sure why Leo Santa Cruz was unable to go forward with a planned fall rematch. Instead, the two boxers will be involved in a FOX televised doubleheader from the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Santa Cruz will defend his WBA "super" featherweight titles against Chris Avalos, while Mares defends his WBA "regular" championship against once-beaten Andres Gutierrez.
Sensational three-division champion Leo "El Terremoto" Santa Cruz will defend his featherweight world title against Chris Avalos, while four-time world champion Abner Mares defends his 126-pound championship against once-beaten Andres Gutierrez at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. on a show presented by Premier Boxing Champions live on FOX and FOX Deportes on Saturday, October 14. Televised coverage begins at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT.
The opponents are set for the tune-up fights Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares hope will lead to their rematch sometime early in 2018. The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday night that Santa Cruz will face Chris Avalos and Mares will meet Andres Gutierrez in 126-pound title fights FOX will televise October 14 from StubHub Center in Carson, California. Santa Cruz and Mares tentatively were supposed to fight again October 7 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, but their rematch was postponed because they couldn’t come to a financial agreement to box in a fight Showtime was supposed to televise.

Carl Frampton’s camp say they are working to agree a new date for the Frampton Gutierrez fight after Saturday’s event had to be cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice. The match was called off after Mexican Andres Gutierrez fell in the shower, damaging his chin and front teeth.

Tomorrow night's fight between former two-weight world champion Carl Frampton and Andres Gutierrez in Belfast is off. The bout had been sanctioned as a WBC World Featherweight title eliminator but that was quashed after Frampton came in one pound over the 126lb limit.
