Jackson: If That Was Andre Ward's Best, Then He is Past His Prime

Sergey Kovalev says he overrated Andre Ward before their first fight, which was one of the reasons the former champion claims he over-trained for it. At worst, the 33-year-old Ward is considered one of the top three boxers, pound-for-pound, in the world on most credible lists. Like Kovalev, however, John David Jackson wasn’t as impressed as he thought he’d be by Ward, who overcame difficulty early to score a close unanimous-decision victory over Kovalev in their light heavyweight title fight November 19 in Las Vegas.

Kovalev: Judges Will Do Their Best; If Not, Fans Will See It

Hunter: Ward Has No Fear of Kovalev; He's Getting Smashed!

Andre Ward and his trainer, Virgil Hunter, have a healthy respect for Sergey Kovalev. They won’t allow the obvious animosity among the light heavyweight rivals to detract from Kovalev’s skills. But after spending 12 rounds in the ring against the Russian knockout artist, they’re more confident than ever that Ward is the better fighter.

Hunter: My Time Away From Camp Didn't Hurt Ward; He's A Pro

Virgil Hunter isn’t concerned about his week away from Andre Ward’s training camp. The veteran trainer, who has worked with Ward since Ward was 9 years old, wouldn’t have left last week if Hunter thought it would’ve had a negative impact on Ward’s preparation for his light heavyweight championship rematch against Sergey Kovalev. Hunter reminded reporters during a conference call Wednesday that Ward is an experienced pro and did everything he needed to do while Hunter traveled to France and Canada to work corners for other fighters he trains on back-to-back nights last weekend.

Kovalev, Jackson: We Won at Least 8 of 12 Rounds Over Ward

After watching their fight on television screens, Sergey Kovalev and his trainer, John David Jackson, feel the same way they did in the immediate aftermath of Kovalev’s controversial loss to Andre Ward. They can’t see any way Ward won more than four rounds in their 12-round light heavyweight title fight November 19 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Barrios: Kovalev's Rage Could Be His Downfall in Ward Rematch

Up and coming super lightweight prospect Mario "Golden Boy" Barrios (18-0) returns to the ring Sunday at the Pioneer Event Center in Lancaster, California against Jose Luis Rodriguez (21-9). The bout will serve as the FS1 televised co-feature bout in chief support of the Brandon Rios-Aaron Herrera main event.

Jackson, Kovalev: Our Team is Stronger; Ward's Ploy Didn't Work

John David Jackson and Sergey Kovalev contend that the “mind games” they think Andre Ward and his handlers have played recently have only made their team stronger. Jackson, Kovalev’s trainer, and Kovalev confirmed during a conference call Tuesday that they spoke last week after news spread regarding a BoxingScene.com exclusive in which Josh Dubin, Ward’s attorney and adviser, and James Prince, Ward’s manager, said Jackson called them earlier this year about switching sides prior to their rematch. Jackson acknowledged that he had discussions with Ward’s team, but stated that those on Ward’s side initiated the conversation.

Ward To Kovalev: You Can Lie To The Public - You Can't Lie To Me!

WBO, WBA and IBF light heavyweight world champion Andre "S.O.G." Ward (31-0, 15 KOs) is disputing the recent claims that were made by Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev (30-1-1, 26 KOs), who says the undefeated champion has no pop on his punches and hits like a girl. Their rematch takes place Saturday, June 17 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
