New York- Highly regarded as one of the most talented super welterweights, Demetrius Andrade (24-0, 18 KO’s) has found himself inactive since March of this year. The trend of fighting once a year has been something Andrade has not been a stranger to. Since 2014 he’s been in the ring with only a single outing per year.
He traveled to Germany and defeated Jack Culcay (22-2, 11 KO’s) for his "regular" version of the WBA super welterweight title. A lot of trash talking between Andrade and IBO/WBA 'super' champion Erislandy Lara (24-2-2, 14 KO’s,) has taken place on social media but never amounted into a fight. Talks for the fight are supposed to take place in September but it seems like Andrade wants to move on from that fight.
“It takes two to see the man in action,” Andrade told BoxingScene.com. "The Lara vs Andrade thing is getting old. We are we supposed to wait until September to start negotiating when we both been out since March. We could have fought already, so what are we waiting for? Boy is 35 years old with a cane like 'hey son how you doing.'”
Andrade has also been in social media wars with the Charlo brothers. Jermall Charlo (26-0, 20 KO’s), now at middleweight, disposed of Sebastian Heiland with Andrade in attendance. WBC 154-pound champion Jermell Charlo (29-0, 14 KO’s) was on hand as well. Andrade and Jermall Charlo had to be separated in the tunnels outside of the post-fight press conference room.
Andrade says he has bigger fish to fry and was not impressed by Jermall’s performance.
“Jermall fought a punching bag,” stated Andrade. “We continue to let these things in the sport of boxing. It’s unfair to guys like me that want to fight and we can’t settle for this, Charlo kid fighting a punching bag and I can’t get a fight. Competition is at 54 but I would go to 160 but I’m not going to 160 to face the Charlos, I’m over that phase.”
