Sports Authority of India Mulls Legal Action on AIBA

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) is mulling legal options against the international governing body for amateur boxing AIBA following its decision to suspend female boxer Sarita Devi for refusing to accept the bronze medal at the recent Incheon Asian Games. The International Boxing Association (AIBA) provisionally suspended Sarita Devi for refusing to accept the bronze medal and also barred her from competing in the World Championships that will be held next month at the Jeju Islands in South Korea.

Devi Issues Apology Over Scandal With Medal at Games

Sarita Devi has made an unconditional apology for refusing to accept her bronze medal at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. The International amateur Boxing Association said on Friday the Indian boxer had apologised for her protest against the judging. The IABA and Asian Games organisers were infuriated by her behaviour and the boxing administrators had threatened disciplinary action against the 32-year-old.

Charly Suarez Loses, Settles For Silver Medal in Final

The last man standing in the Philippines boxing team’s quest for gold, lightweight Charly Suarez had to settle for a silver medal when he failed to duplicate his winning form in the Kazakhstan’s President Cup where he handily defeated Mongolia’s Otgondalai Dorjnyambuu. Losing in his rematch with the tough Mongolian who deserved the victory. In an Asian Games boxing tournament rife with controversy, protests and accusations of fixed fights the Kazakhstan judge inexplicably scored the bout by a 30-27 shutout for Suarez who lost the first two rounds and was only able to mount a comeback in the final round.

Boxer's Medal Refusal Creates High Drama at Games

INCHEON South Korea - Indian boxer L Sarita Devi's refusal to accept her bronze medal on the podium went against the values of sportsmanship, Asian Games organisers said on Thursday, adding they were reviewing the incident and could take action against her. Sarita refused to wear the medal when it was presented on Wednesday, taking it only in her hand before trying to drape it over the South Korean fighter who had beaten her the previous day. When the presentation was over, she left the medal behind, despite being told by the organisers to take it with her.

Schmitz Leaves Sauerland For Amateur Boxing Run

It was announced in Kiel that Torsten Schmitz is leaving Sauerland Event for a continued career in amateur boxing. Schmitz was first with Universum and trained the likes of Luan Krasniqi, Bernd Schenk, Thomas Ulrich, Armand Krajnc and Regina Halmich. He was also with SES and worked with Robert Stieglitz and later joined Sauerland where he assisted Karsten Rover in training the likes of Juergen Braehmer, Sebastian Sylvester, Tyron Zeuge, Erik Skoglund and Enrico Koelling.

Top Amateur Boxer Tony Losey Dies in Tank Accident

Tony Losey, regarded as the third best welterweight in USA Boxing’s national amateur rankings, was tragically killed Tuesday in an industrial accident involving a tank he was refurbishing, The Wichita Eagle reported. Losey, a subcontractor at a local steel plate fabricator in Wichita, Kansas, was standing under a tarp when the accident took place, according to the report. As the 22-year-old sandblasted the estimated 12,000-pound tank, it shifted and fell on him in a rare occurrence, per Wichita police Sgt. John Ryan.

Antony Fowler Aims For Olympic Gold at 2016 Games

Adams' Injury Rules Out November South Korea Games

Nicola Adams has been forced to withdraw from the Women's World Boxing Championships in South Korea in November due to injury. The Olympic and Commonwealth champion is due to have an operation on a shoulder injury in the next two weeks which will keep out of the ring for up to six months. Adams had been desperate to claim the one major title that still eludes her after three consecutive world silver medals in 2008, 2010 and 2012.

Amateur Boxer and her father banned for PED distribution

Sophie Tinklin, an amateur 20-year-old boxer from Wales in the United Kingdom, has been banned for four years by the sport’s anti-doping body for distributing performance-enhancing drugs, according to the Reuters news agency. U.K. Anti Doping lists Tinklin’s violation date as occurring in July 2012. Her ban will end in February 2018. She was accused of “possession of one or more prohibited substances; trafficking or attempting trafficking of prohibited substances; and assisting, encouraging, aiding, abetting or covering up or any other type of complicity involving an anti-doping rule violation or any attempted anti-doping rule violation.”
