TAMPA – Amanda Serrano could not have better summarized the aftermath of her latest victory.
“It’s Katie Taylor time, baby,” Serrano told BoxingScene.com and other reporters as she walked off stage following the post-fight press conference to discuss her ten-round virtual shutout of Miriam Gutierrez.
The seven-division titlist reached a point during fight week where any conversation regarding Ireland’s Taylor (20-0, 6KOs) would be immediately shut down. Serrano did not want to give Madrid’s Gutierrez (14-2, 5KOs) anything but her undivided attention ahead of their lightweight fight this past Saturday as the co-feature of a Showtime Pay-Per-View from AMALIE Arena in Tampa.
Naturally, there were media members eager to discuss the potential superfight looming ahead with Taylor, who one week prior made the fifth defense of her undisputed lightweight championship and 12th overall defense of at least one lightweight title. While the Irish superstar was now free to talk about the fight on her end, Serrano (42-1-1, 30KOs) still had her job to do in her second consecutive co-feature slot to content creator Jake Paul (5-0, 4KOs), whose Most Valuable Promotions now guides her career.
Still, the selection of Gutierrez was by design as the 38-year-old Spaniard had only lost to Taylor prior to Saturday evening. With that fight out the way, the focus is on finalizing what is already being hailed as the biggest fight in women’s boxing history.
“We are both pound-for-pound top three. Some people have me at two or three,” noted Serrano, who has won 28 consecutive fights dating back to 2012. “It doesn’t matter how you look at it. Two pound-for-pound girls going at it. You have an undisputed champion and a seven-division world champion going after each other.
“That’s the mega fight that will blow off the roof. We’re looking at Madison Square Garden, the main (room). It’s going to be an amazing night.”
