Promoter Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing, who handles newly crowned WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-0, 8KOs), says a fall fight with Manny Pacquiao is the perfect match to be made.
On Saturday night at Barclays Center, Algieri won a twelve round split decision over Ruslan Provodnikov to capture the WBO belt.
Earlier this week, Pacquiao's promoter, Top Rank's Bob Arum, tipped Algieri to pull off the upset. And by gaining the win, Arum said Algieri would become a highly considered candidate to face Pacquiao on November 22 in Macau.
"It was great to hear earlier in the week that [Algieri could get Pacquiao with a win] and Bob was right on the money. Chris is a perfect opponent, perfect fight for Manny Pacquiao. But now Chris just blew the doors off and really made it the fight. To be down twice in the first round, to have his eye closed - you couldn't write a better script. This was the Rocky story. To be down twice in the first, to have his eye closed shut and still win - that was Rocky," DeGuardia told BoxingScene.com.
