Luis Carlos Abregú (36-1, 29 KOs) sounds frustrated as he speaks to BoxingScene from his home in Argentina.  After fighting only once in the last year following a hand injury, his mood is understandable, added to that the fact that he has been waiting for a new date and opponent for a number of months.

“It’s been a long time and I’m a bit annoyed because I still don’t have any news,” he confesses.

“It’s very difficult every day to train without knowing what’s happening, or without knowing when I will fight.  It hasn’t been easy all this time.

“I’m just training to keep myself in good shape.  I train every day because it’s my job and I enjoy it but it’s a different type of training than when you fight.”

Abregú recently spent a few days sparring with Lucas Matthysse just before his contest against Roberto Ortíz for the WBC silver title at 140lbs.  It was an experience that the Salta native found beneficial.

“It was good work, I worked with him and some other guys there, it helped me a lot.  Matthysse was ready to fight and I was able to be at his level, I was essential sparring for him at that point in his camp.  It was the third or fourth time that I’ve worked with him.”

There were rumours at one stage that Abregú could be the opponent for Manny Pacquiao in Macau, later Chris Algieri was announced for the Filipino’s next bout.  ‘El Potro’ doesn’t envisage a successful night for the American on November 22.

“I don’t see any way he can beat him, I think that’s why they chose Algieri.  They didn’t want to fight me, they considered me too much of a risk so they chose an opponent who is less difficult.

“Some boxers want to earn a lot of money without fighting me, or rather, they prefer to fight ones who are better known but less risky.”

Following the interview, Abregú informed BoxingScene that there is a good chance he will fight on the undercard of the potential Timothy Bradley versus Diego Cháves fight on December 13.
