Abner Mares: record, next fight and profile →

Luis Sandoval catches up with trainer Nacho Beristain to discuss Jhonny Gonzalez's upcoming fight with three division world champion Abner Mares.

Abner Mares and Jhonny Gonzalez will collide in a featherweight title fight on August 24 in Carson, California. However, it’s not the first time the two shared ring space. The two were once sparring partners back when both were trained by Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Beristain. Gonzalez is still with the Hall of Fame trainer, but Mares moved on in 2009 and has since fought under the Espinoza Boxing Club banner. Both fighters have enjoyed varying degrees of success since those days, but still recall their time spent together in past camps. Neither expects the element of familiarity to impact their forthcoming Showtime-televised main event.

Three Time, Three Division World Champion and current WBC Featherweight World Champion Abner Mares, Former Two-Division World Champion Jhonny Gonzalez, Former IBF Bantamweight World Champion Leo Santa Cruz, WBC Super Bantamweight World Champion Victor Terrazas, 2012 United States Olympian Dominic Breazeale, Lenroy Thomas, 2012 United States Olympian Joseph Diaz Jr., and Undefeated featherweight prospect Julian Ramirez work out at the Fabela Chavez Boxing Club in preparation for their upcoming fights at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. WBC featherweight king Abner Mares is just a week away from his upcoming title defense against former champion Jhonny Gonzalez. The fight will be Mares' first since his May 4th knockout victory over Daniel Ponce de Leon that gave him the WBC strap. The action takes place at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, Calif. and will be televised on Showtime Championship Boxing. Mares appeared on the latest edition of BoxingScene Radio to talk about the fight and said that they are done with the hardest parts of camp and are ready for fight night.

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer speaks with a tremendous amount of pride whenever Abner Mares’ name is mentioned these days, and for good reason. Mares is Golden Boy’s first home-grown champion, earning such status after beating Joseph Agbeko for a bantamweight belt in August ’11. There was controversy surrounding the bout, but Mares removed all doubt with a dominant points win in their rematch four months later. The unbeaten boxer has since moved on to win titles in two more weight classes, picking up belts in the super bantamweight and featherweight division, the latter where he presently resides as champion. Mares will have a chance to add to his already stellar résumé when he faces Jhonny Gonzalez in their August 24 Showtime-televised main event in Carson, California.

It’s only natural to wonder about a potential fight between Abner Mares and Leo Santa Cruz. Mares is a 126-pound titleholder who also held belts at 122 and 118. Leo Santa Cruz is a 122-pound contender who previous held a title at bantamweight. Both are with Golden Boy Promotions, and they’ve shared Showtime broadcasts twice. They will do so for a third time on Aug. 24, when Mares defends his title against Jhonny Gonzalez and Santa Cruz challenges Victor Terrazas for a junior featherweight belt. But it’s not yet time to put them together, according to Golden Boy Promotions executive Richard Schaefer.

When you boast a résumé and upcoming schedule like that of Abner Mares, you know better than to look past the opponent in front of you. The 27-year old endured a brutal schedule dating back to his first title fight with Yonnhy Perez in May ’10, yet remains unbeaten while collecting three titles along the way. Another tough test awaits, as Mares makes the first defense of his featherweight belt against Jhonny Gonzalez on August 24 in Carson, California. The bout headlines a Showtime Championship Boxing doubleheader, but it’s the other leg of the show that has people talking about Mares’ future. Leo Santa Cruz meets defending 122 lb. titlist Vic Terrazas, with serious talk about the evening’s winners facing off against one another down the road. The card doesn’t mark the first time that Mares and Santa Cruz have appeared on the same show, nor are talks of a future clash anything he hasn’t repeatedly heard in the past.

In his final week of preparation, former world champion Jhonny Gonzalez is putting together the finishing touches on his strategy to reclaim the featherweight title of the World Boxing Council (WBC) from the current titleholder Abner Mares. Their showdown is scheduled for the 24th of this month in Carson, California. Gonzalez (54-8, 46 KOs), a former two-division world champion at bantamweight and featherweight, has several directions in mind. During camp, he worked hard on several strategies to take down Mares (26-0-1, 14 KOs).

BoxingScene.com's audio show, Boxing Scene Radio , returns with another packed show. The show is hosted by BoxingScene correspondants Ernest Gabion, Luis Sandoval and Ryan Burton. The show starts at 6PM Pacific/9PM Eastern , and runs for two to three hours. HustleBoss.com/BoxingScene.com stepped inside of the Elite Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Santa Fe Springs, Calif. as WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14 KO’s) boxed with junior lightweight prospect Luis Martinez ahead of his Aug. 24 clash with former champion Jhonny Gonzalez. Mares faces off with Gonzalez in a Showtime attraction from the StubHub Center in nearby Carson in what will serve as the first defense of his new title. Mares won his WBC bauble with a resounding 10th round TKO over Daniel Ponce De Leon this past May in Las Vegas after moving up in weight and has stamped himself as one of the rising stars in the sport.
