Abner Mares Will Work With Manny Robles, Parts With Robert Garcia

The three-time world champion Abner Mares patiently waits for the moment to return to the gym and finally execute his plan to get back into a professional ring, something he will do with the hand of the renowned coach Manny Robles, with whom he agreed to hire after parting ways with Robert Garcia.

Mares, 34-years-old with a record of 31-3-1 and 15 KOs, has not fought in the ring since June 2018.

Last year he was going to fight Gervonta Davis, but an eye injury prevented him and after undergoing treatment was he cleared after a few months.

However, he decided to hold off a little longer and get everything ready to return in May, something that will eventually have to wait due to the ongoing Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

“I have always tried to be a professional. I'm going to do about two fights, maybe three before I retire," Mares told ESPN Deportes.

"I told Robert that I was not going to continue training with him, we were on good terms. My new coach will be Manny Robles, who is a great coach, has good style and has worked with great fighters, world champions, such as Andy Ruiz, Óscar Valdez."

With this in mind, Mares revealed that his return was planned for May, but now he does not really know when he will be able to return:

"We had planned to return in 2020, we had more or less the agenda planned to return in May, two fights in the year, but now I think I will only fight once, we will see when. It is a bit awkward, but at the same time I start thinking about what everyone is going through, fighters who had dates and then they were canceled, David Benavidez being one of them. Many fighters have been affected and I am more sorry for the fighters, because it is a very difficult time."
