Abel Sanchez: Garcia is Special, But Biting Off A lot With Spence

By Radio Rahim

Abel Sanchez, best known as the trainer for middleweight star Gennady Golovkin, would love to see Mikey Garcia pull off the upset on Saturday night - but he's not very confident of that outcome taking place.

He expects Errol Spence to use his advantages in size and power to secure the win - but he also expects Garcia to do well in the fight.

Garcia, the WBC lightweight champion, is moving up by two weight divisions to challenge Spence for the IBF welterweight title at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Sanchez broke down his thoughts on the big fight.

"I find it difficult [for Garcia to win] because that's a big man. I still see Mikey as a featherweight, super featherweight. The last three, four fights have been decisions I think. Spence is a big man, coming down from 180-pounds. It's going to be difficult, but I think Mikey is going to give him a run for his money," Sanchez said.

"I think if Spence is on him, and he hits him and he hits him - he will just wear him down. When Spence came out of the Olympics, that year, I thought he and Marcus Browne would be the best pros [from the United States team], and Marcus Browne has just won a title and Spence is doing exceptionally well. Spence is a big, big man. I would really like to see Mikey win, but it's going to be very difficult."

And should Garcia get knocked out, or lose while in a competitive fight, Sanchez expects his profile to go unaffected or potentially skyrocket.

"Look, Pacquiao got knocked out by a heck of a shot and put to sleep by Marquez. Mikey is a special fighter. Is he undefeated? Has he dominated everyone that he ever faced? But this particular time he's biting off a lot," Sanchez said.

"And if he can do it, I think it would be comparable to when Duran fought Hagler and lost by a few rounds - because Duran came up from lightweight up to middleweight. If Mikey can hang in there for twelve rounds and make it a competitive fight, Mikey's stock would go way up high. He would drop down to 140 and nobody there would fight him. Even at 147, I think Spence is the best fighter at welterweight so who else at 147 would handle Mikey," Sanchez said.

[QUOTE=champion4ever;19583368]Yes, he should have relied more on his defense as opposed to offense because his slugging ability left his chin more often than not very vulnerable and exposed to huge punchers and counter punchers; Which in the long run probably…

[QUOTE=champion4ever;19581125]Yes I do remember that fight vividly. He was throwing some major haymakers at Simon Brown but he was covering up nicely and countered him over and over again at will. Norris ruined his career in believing that he was…
