Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez is very focused on cementing his name in the history books, when he faces WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev.

Canelo vs. Kovalev takes place on November at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Canelo, who fought in a middleweight unification back in May, is moving up by two weight classes to challenge Kovalev.

Canelo has never fought beyond the super middleweight limit of 168-pounds. He made his 168 debut in December 2018, when he crushed Rocky Fielding in three rounds to capture the WBA "regular" title.

"We believe we have the capabilities to win this title. You have to take risks to make history and that is what I am doing,” Canelo told TUDN.

The Mexican three-time world champion recalled that his coach, Eddy Reynoso, was the first one to think about this fight.

“Eddy began to think about having a fight with one of the best at 175. I finished the fight with (Daniel) Jacobs and we started looking for it; the fourth title and very few have achieved it. Being champion in three divisions is a lot for me and my story - but we want more,” Canelo said.

Regarding diet and exercises to increase poundage, he said - “we are consuming a lot of carbohydrates, proteins; I don't do weights.”

History and his large group of followers are motivating him to push forward. He plans to fight smart and tactical with Kovalev - and not make it a bloody, grueling war with the much bigger man.

"My biggest motivation is the people who follow me, and in the end there are more of them [when my fights conclude]. I don't focus on defeating my detractors or those who don't believe in me... but without wanting to I always kill two birds with one stone [when I win],” Canelo said.

“In boxing you have to take care of yourself. Many people tell me that I haven't had as many wars as others have had - but there is no need for you to let yourself take a beating and to be bloody to be a great fighter. I fight with my style. Making it a war does not necessarily make it a great fight. I am not going to stop what I'm doing to get all bloody and get knocked down all over the place if I have no need to."
