World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman says Lucas Matthysse (34-2-1, 32KOs) and Danny Garcia (26-0, 16KOs) must fight each other next. Golden Boy Promotions wants to stage the fight on September 7th. Matthysse is the WBC's interim champion, while Garcia has the full title and the WBA's "super title" at 140-pounds. Both boxer had interim bouts in the first half of the year, with Garcia winning a twelve round decision over Zab Judah and Matthysse stopping IBF champion Lamont Peterson in the third round of a non-title match.

"Because Garcia was hurt, he was unable to fight for a long time. We followed the rules and gave Matthysse the opportunity, because he was the number one contender, to fight with a fairly tough boxer [Peterson]. He won by knockout in the third round and now we will not allow him, nor Garcia, to make another [voluntary] defense. Now there has to be a fight between the two of them to make one undisputed WBC champion at light welterweight," Sulaiman said.
