Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, president of the World Boxing Association, announced Wednesday at a press conference held in Panama City, that his organization is making a lot of progress with eliminating unnecessary WBA titles. The organization, per Mendoza, already has 8 divisions out of the 17 in boxing , with only one champion.

Jason Sosa has advised the WBA that he was vacating his "regular" super featherweight title, in order to move forward with a scheduled HBO televised fight against WBO champion Vasyl Lomachenko on April 8.

"Yesterday (February 14) Jason Sosa vacated his title. Jezreel Corrales remains as the super champion of the division. According to the rules, there will be no other champion in that division. So we have 8 clean categories as promised," said Mendoza.

Sosa notified the WBA Championships Committee by way of a letter, advising the organization that he was taking a fight that gave him a "life changing" purse. He had been previously ordered by the WBA to fight Corrales in a mandatory fight to set down a single WBA champion in his respective weight division.

Mendoza stated that he will continue to work on the remaining 9 divisions to achieve his goal:

"On March 18 in the middleweight division, unless Golovkin-Jacobs (super champion and 160-pound champion respectively) finishes in a draw, we will have one champion. The fight between Guillermo Ringondeaux, super bantamweight champion and Moisés Flores, our interim champion, was delayed due to the injury of James Kirkland and they were planned to fight in that card (on February 25 in Texas)," Mendoza said.

Mendoza added: "You see it is not easy, because a lot things happen . We assume our responsibility in this case, but I consider that we have been working to solve this at a good pace. "

As for the heavyweights, a tournament is being worked out to consolidate all of the belts.
