Yuriorkis Gamboa Ready To Face Abner Mares in Cancun
By Miguel Rivera
Promoter Pepe Gomez of Cancun Boxing is attempting to put together a fight between Yuriorkis "Cyclone of Guantanamo" Gamboa (23-0, 16 KOs) and WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares (26-0, 14KOs). Mares said he was willing to face Gamboa on the condition that their fight takes place in Cancun, Mexico. Gamboa has very little interest in facing Terence Crawford and wants an established name with meaning, like Mares - who defends his title against Jhonny Gonzalez on August 24th.
"I am willing to fight Mares at a selected weight. He's at 126 pounds and he could move. I'm at 135 pounds, but I'm willing to go down. I think the proper weight to have this fight would be at 130 pounds," said Gamboa.
"I accept the challenge. I'll face him, but I want the fight to be in Cancun, that's my only condition," Mares said
Gamboa said the location is not a problem.
Both fighters plan to be at Cancun Boxing's next event on August 17th as guests, where Gamboa plans to call Mares out.
"I'm ready to face him in Cancun. We just need to set the date and it will be a great privilege to fight in this beautiful city which has become a major international boxing venue. I know Abner is also coming here as a guest for the function on August 17 and that makes me very happy because I will also be here at that time and I will take the opportunity to challenge him face to face," Gamboa said.
I gotta respect Mares for having tough fight after tough fight. The kid is always testing himself. I appreciate that. With that being said. I think Gamboa takes this one.Comment by Light_Speed on 07-19-2013

To all the Mexicans. I always hear how Mexicans love great offensive fighters and hate fighters that counter puncher and move around. I even heard that some Mexicans rooted for Pacquiao when he had his clashes with Juan Manuel Marquez…Comment by Frank Ducketts on 07-18-2013
Gamboa imo can't make 126.Comment by kiaba360 on 07-18-2013
Gamboa looked solid at 135, but he's a fuckin midget so him wanting to fight a FW shouldn't be a surprise. Yes, he would out-weigh Mares, which is why I don't think he should take the fight right now. Crawford…Post a Comment - View More User Comments (96)
