Ward: Martinez on top at 160, Golovkin should face Quillin

By Bill "Two Scoops" Emes

WBA super middleweight king Andre Ward (26-0, 14KOs) discussed the recent knockout victory by IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24KOs), a potential fight with the rising middleweight puncher, who Golovkin should face to prove his worth as the top dog at 160, and why he thinks WBC Sergio Martinez should still be considered the top fighter at 160-pounds.

Possible Flaws on Golovkin

Ward: One thing that you see is, he hasn't had a reason to be concerned with defense. Everybody gets hit, but he is hittable. I don't want to poke holes in his performance or poke holes in his style. You can do that with any fighter. In a nutshell, great performance [over Matthew Macklin].

Golovkin's Rank at Middleweight

Ward: I think he is high up there, two or three. I know some are saying that Martinez is not what he used to be, and he has had some rough outings lateley and pulled them out, like his last fight. But until someone can dominate and beat Martinez, in my opinion he's in that top spot.

Potentially Facing Golovkin

Ward: I don't have a problem fighting with anybody. But if you ask Golovkin's team, they'll tell you that fight is a year or two away [as confirmed by an earlier article on BoxingScene.com]. That's a better question for them.

I don't think they want it right now. They've said it in front of me and that's cool. And I'm not the kind of guy who is going to make a bunch of noise and tries to steal a guy's shine. Golovkin is strong and he's a great fighter. They don't want it right now, but if he keeps winning the public is going to demand it. If I stay at 168, for another year or two, why not? I'm not in the sport to duck or dodge. I'm used to fighting a boogeyman. I've fought the monsterous punchers.

What Golovkin Should Do To Take Top Spot at 160

Ward: I'd like to see Golovkin against a young fighter like [WBO champion] Kid Chocolate [Peter Quillin]. Obviously they are on two different spectums, HBO and Showtime, so that's going to be difficult [to make the fight]. I think that if he can do [what he did to Macklin] in a fight like that [with Quillin] - then I think maybe he has the top spot [at 160].

[QUOTE=Earl Hickey;13520902]good grief you are a nuthugger[/QUOTE] I like Ward, but everything I said was true. People attach the boring logo to this man, and this dude is a violently skilled BEAST. He's a true God of War. To me,…

[QUOTE=T18Z;13520700]He beat an extremely drained Chad Dawson who on his next fight got KO'd in one round. It's a crap win sorry. Ward isn't a star, deal with it.[/QUOTE] HAHAHAHA!!!! Chad wasnt drained. He had a glass jaw because of…

I wish Andre would just get in the ring with anyone at this point. I'm sick of him talking when he has nothing scheduled. He's letting his prime years waste away waiting to fight Chavez lumping Junior.

GGG is shining and damn before the fight everybody gave credit to Macklin but now that GGG completely destroyed him showing that the irish is not so good,i don't know why but they don't want to give him the credit…

I really hope Andre doesn't move away to 175. Ward vs. Golovkin would be awesome to see- maybe at a catch weight or something? Such an interesting clash of styles. I was shocked at how easily GGG steam rolled Macklin.
