WBA super middleweight king Andre Ward (26-0, 14KOs) discussed the recent knockout victory by IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24KOs), a potential fight with the rising middleweight puncher, who Golovkin should face to prove his worth as the top dog at 160, and why he thinks WBC Sergio Martinez should still be considered the top fighter at 160-pounds.
Possible Flaws on Golovkin
Ward: One thing that you see is, he hasn't had a reason to be concerned with defense. Everybody gets hit, but he is hittable. I don't want to poke holes in his performance or poke holes in his style. You can do that with any fighter. In a nutshell, great performance [over Matthew Macklin].
Golovkin's Rank at Middleweight
Ward: I think he is high up there, two or three. I know some are saying that Martinez is not what he used to be, and he has had some rough outings lateley and pulled them out, like his last fight. But until someone can dominate and beat Martinez, in my opinion he's in that top spot.
Potentially Facing Golovkin
Ward: I don't have a problem fighting with anybody. But if you ask Golovkin's team, they'll tell you that fight is a year or two away [as confirmed by an earlier article on BoxingScene.com]. That's a better question for them.
I don't think they want it right now. They've said it in front of me and that's cool. And I'm not the kind of guy who is going to make a bunch of noise and tries to steal a guy's shine. Golovkin is strong and he's a great fighter. They don't want it right now, but if he keeps winning the public is going to demand it. If I stay at 168, for another year or two, why not? I'm not in the sport to duck or dodge. I'm used to fighting a boogeyman. I've fought the monsterous punchers.
What Golovkin Should Do To Take Top Spot at 160
Ward: I'd like to see Golovkin against a young fighter like [WBO champion] Kid Chocolate [Peter Quillin]. Obviously they are on two different spectums, HBO and Showtime, so that's going to be difficult [to make the fight]. I think that if he can do [what he did to Macklin] in a fight like that [with Quillin] - then I think maybe he has the top spot [at 160].
