Macklin Frustrated: I've Agreed To Felix Sturm's Terms

New York, NY - Top-rated middleweight contender Matthew Macklin is getting a bit tired and frustrated, to say the least, on waiting to hear what direction IBF middleweight champion Felix Sturm is heading for his next bout. Macklin and Sturm's well documented and publicized history dates back to their first bout, which took place in Sturm's home country of Germany in 2011. The bout was Macklin's first world title opportunity and the Irishman made the most of it. Macklin took the fight right to the hometown hero Sturm, who was defending his title for the 10th consecutive time. It was a grueling battle, with Macklin seemingly having the clear advantage after the 12-round championship bout. CompuBox had Macklin averaging 92 punches thrown per round, doubling Sturm's output. Macklin also landed 127 more punches and outlanded Sturm in 11 of the 12 rounds. Unfortunately though, two of the three judges didn't see the fight that way, awarding Sturm a split decision and leaving Macklin longing for another shot at the champ.

On Saturday evening Matthew Macklin (30-5) bounced back from his June knockout loss to Gennady Golovkin by defeating Lamar Russ (14-1) via unanimous decision in a bout televised by HBO. After the fight Macklin said he was happy to get back in the winner's column but felt he was trying to hard to get a knockout. "I think I was forcing things a little bit too much. I was forcing things too much instead of setting up traps. I was loading up on my punches too much," Macklin stated.

According to middleweight contender Matthew Macklin (28-3, 19KOs), WBA champion Felix Sturm tried to force him into a rematch agreement that would guarantee Sturm a 40% take of Macklin's future earnings. Macklin lost a controversial split decision victory to Sturm in June 2011. Macklin is scheduled to face middleweight king Sergio Martinez on March 17th at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Often is the case that some sort of protest takes place by the offended party, but rarely if ever does anything ever come of it. The New Jersey State Athletic Commission couldn’t completely reverse the disgraceful scoring turned in by the three ringside judges at the Boardwalk Hall. Rather than accept that fate and simply complain about the result, the next best step was taken – revoking their licenses pending satisfactory remedial training.

BERLIN: Germany’s world middleweight champion Felix Sturm has already promised Ireland’s Matthew Macklin a rematch after defending his WBA title in controversial fashion with a split decision. After a gruelling 12 rounds, the champion was left with a cut above his eyelid, but Sturm was awarded the fight by the judges 113-115, 116-112 and 116-112 in front of an 18,500 strong crowd in Cologne.

The fan favorite of England and Ireland, said the German television broadcasters had him winning the fight by four points.
