Sergio 'Maravilla' Martinez is riding strong on the promise of Jose Sulaiman, President of the World Boxing Council (WBC), who recently told him that the sanctioning body's middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. would have to face him by March of next year. Chavez has an optional defense scheduled, likely against Peter Manfredo Jr., on the tentative date of November 19. Martinez faces undefeated Darren Barker on October 1.

"In a legitimate conversation with Don Jose Sulaiman and Mauricio (WBC president's son), I received the promise that next year in March, I would be fighting for the world championship at 160-pounds," said Martinez. "So Chavez will make an optional defense, and the winner of that defense is going to fight me for the world title."
