StubHub Center, Carson, California - Leo Santa Cruz (25-0-1, 15KOs) beat down Victor Terrazas (37-3-1, 21KOs) in three rounds to capture the WBC super bantamweight championship. Santa Cruz becomes a two-division beltholder. Santa Cruz had Terrazas on the backfoot in the very first round. Terrazas was fighting back hard, but getting hit often in the process. In the second, the right eye of Terrazas was swelling shut from the incoming punches and there plenty of them landing.

WBC super bantamweight champion Victor Terrazas is busy, but not nearly as busy as Leo Santa Cruz, who landed twice the featherweight average for total punches. Terrazas landed just 7 of his 42 jabs per round - he'll have to do better than that to hang with Santa Cruz, who landed 20 power punches per round than Terrazas.

Their handlers at Golden Boy Promotions hope to one day match Leo Santa Cruz against Abner Mares in what undoubtedly would be a fan-friendly featherweight title fight in Southern California. But the undefeated Santa Cruz cannot think about meeting Mares this week. Not with what he expects will be a very difficult fight against WBC super bantamweight champion Victor Terrazas awaiting him Saturday night in Carson, Calif. (Showtime; 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT). “I think Terrazas is going to be the toughest fighter I’ve fought in my career,” Santa Cruz said. “He’s a great champion. He likes to come forward and throw a lot of punches. He’s a true Mexican warrior, very brave. But those are the kinds of fighters I like.”

By Jake Donovan - All four televised participants are at the scales for Saturday’s SHOWTIME-televised doubleheader, which airs live from the StubHub Center in Carson, California. The headliner features Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14KO) in the first defense of his featherweight belt, which comes against its former claimant, Jhonny Gonzalez (54-8, 46KO). In the televised co-feature, all-action former bantamweight titlist Leo Santa Cruz seeks his second title reign, as he faces reigning 122 lb. titlist Vic Terrazas (37-2-1, 21KO). Santa Cruz, who previously reigned as bantamweight titlist, tipped the scales at 121.75 lb. Terrazas came in slightly lighter at 121 lb for the first defense of the belt, which he won in his vacant title fight versus Cristian Mijares earlier this year.

By Thomas Gerbasi - In describing WBC super bantamweight champion Victor Terrazas, the man he will be facing on Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, Leo Santa Cruz reserves the highest praise for his Mexican countryman. “I see another me,” said the former IBF bantamweight king in search of a second divisional world title. “He comes forward, throws a lot of punches, he’s Mexican, and he’s a warrior. So I think it’s going to be a war, and I think whoever comes more prepared is gonna take it that night.” If you’ve seen Santa Cruz fight before, you would have to think that facing someone like that would be a fate worse than a week’s worth of root canals. But when you present this idea to “Teremoto,” he just laughs. “It gives me more motivation to go out there and fight hard.” That’s why Leo Santa Cruz is currently my favorite fighter, the one I will make sure I am home on Saturday night to see fight. And if he’s not your favorite, he’d better be in your top five or you’re just not a boxing fan. Because despite being just 25 years old, the Huetamo native has an old school approach to the fight game, one where you win fights in the most basic of manners: you throw and land more punches than the other guy. It seems simple, but it’s not. Yet Santa Cruz is on his way to mastering that style, one instilled in him by his father Jose and built on that of the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez.

The final press conference took place for Saturday's championship doublheader at the StubHub Center in Carson, California - which Showtime Championship Boxing will televise. In the main event, Abner Mares will make the first defense of his WBC featherweight championship against former beltholder Jhonny Gonzalez. In the televised co-feature, undefeated mandatory contender Leo Santa Cruz will challenge WBC super bantamweight champion Victor Terrazas.
