Luis Sandoval catches up with newly crowned WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido to discuss his knockout victory over Orlando Cruz, a potential fight with Vasyl Lomachenko and more.

As expected, Orlando Salido's power punching was the difference. He outlanded Orlando Cruz better than 2-1 in that department. 126 of Salido's 131 landed punches were power shots. Salido closed the show in the seventh round to capture the vacant WBO featherweight title.

By Luis Sandoval - Timothy Bradley (31-0, 12KOs) added yet another hall of fame name to his resume as he defeated Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40KOs) by split decision with scores of 115-113 for each fighter and a deciding scorecard of 116-112 for Bradley. Bradley may never receive full credit for his victory over Manny Pacquiao but there shouldn’t be any controversy in his victory over Marquez as he simply out boxed and out worked Juan Manuel Marquez over 12 rounds. Tim was both aggressive and used his boxing skill to both attack and evade Marquez throughout the contest. Even though he was the champion and undefeated, Bradley once again was an underdog but he proved he’s one of the best fighters today scoring one of the biggest victories of his career. Many didn’t expect Bradley to fight as aggressive as he did against Ruslan Provodnikov but he once again came out looking for a fight in the very first round. Bradley moved forward as Marquez looked for countering opportunities and he found some as he was able to land two solid inside left uppercuts on the charging Bradley.

Orlando Salido stopped Orlando Cruz in the seventh round in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Cruz, from Puerto Rico, the first openly gay fighter in professional boxing, failed in his bid to win the WBO featherweight title. Salido dominated throughout and put Cruz away with a right hand to the chin and a left to the body after a heavy exchange of power blows. Cruz went down face first and referee Kenny Bayliss stopped the fight.

Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas - Orlando Salido (40-12-2, 28KOs) has brougt his career back on track with a seventh round knockout of Orlando Cruz (20-3-1, 10KOs) to capture the vacant WBO featherweight title. Cruz moved well and appeared to be the better boxer, but it was Salido who was landing the harder shots, doing the most damage, and putting together hard combinations to push Cruz back. In the seventh, Salido was blasting away with punches and landed a series of punches to the head and body, which sent Cruz down for the count.

The only regret Orlando Salido had when seeing Mikey Garcia lose his featherweight title on the scales this past June, was not having the opportunity to regain the title against the man who dethroned him. He gets the next best thing, a shot at the vacant belt as he faces Puerto Rico’s Orlando Cruz in their co-feature attraction Saturday evening at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The main event pits Tim Bradley versus Juan Manuel Marquez in a welterweight title fight, which tops a four-fight pay-per-view card. Salido has endured an alarming number of peaks and valleys in his career to forge out two separate title reigns. His first tour as a featherweight titlist was one and done, conceding the belt to Yuriorkis Gamboa mere months after claiming the strap. A stoppage win over then-unbeaten Juan Manuel Lopez breathed new life into Salido’s career, scoring a major upset to win another belt in their April ’11 encounter. A near two-year reign followed, including a repeat stoppage over Lopez in their rematch last March. The victory tour came to an end earlier this year, when Garcia soundly outboxed him in their abbreviated bout this past January. Cruz enters the fight having won four straight, though none anywhere near on the level of Salido. Still, the Puerto Rican boxer is brimming with confidence, looking to make history on several levels. A win tonight makes him the third boxer from the 2000 Puerto Rico Olympic boxing squad to claim a major title, giving that team more champions than any other in the island’s history as he would join former champs and teammates Miguel Cotto (who will be at ringside tonight) and Ivan Calderon. More famously, Cruz would also become the first openly gay boxer to own a significant belt, on a weekend celebrating the one-year anniversary of his bravely coming out. Read on to see how the staff at Boxingscene.com believes tonight’s co-feature bout will go down.

Good news: Orlando Cruz opponents (Delgado, Martinez, Pazos, De Leon) landed just 20% of their total punches. Bad News: Orlando Salido throws more power punches per round than Cruz throws total punhces. Salido's chin can be dented, but Cruz's KO percentage is just 44%.

Ryan Burton catches up with Orlando Cruz to discuss the controversy regarding the outfit he plans to wear for the upcoming fight with Orlando Salido for the vacant WBO featherweight championship at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
