Former four division world champion is pleading with IBF/IBO/WBC/WBA middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (36-0, 33KOs) to take some risks if he wants the sport of boxing to survive.
Golovkin was scheduled to make a defense of his title on December 10th. A deal could not be reached in time with mandatory challenger Daniel Jacobs, so Golovkin's next fight is being pushed back to next year.
There are also ongoing discussions for Golovkin to face Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez next September.
If Golovkin is unable to secure the fight with Canelo, Jones would like to see him take a big risk - like the one taken last month by IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook.
Brook moved up by two weight divisions and thirteen pounds to challenge Golovkin for his middleweight titles at the O2 Arena in Lond. After a good start, a fractured orbital bone began to affect his vision and eventually forced the contest to come to a close in the fifth round.
Jones wants Golovkin to move up a division, or two, and take on some of the more dangerous challenges that are lurking in the higher weight classes. Jones is not very happy with the current state of boxing, where many fighters are avoiding real challenges and instead pursuing big paydays against lackluster opposition.
"To some extent Golovkin must be frustrated [with being unable to get Canelo], but he must also be aware that if he doesn't get the fight with Canelo - then he has to look for real challenges, such as going up a division like Kell Brook did with him. That is the only way that you can rescue the sport, because honestly right now [the sport of boxing] is staying in this real comfort zone and if it remains like that the sport will be finished," Jones told Erika Montoya.
