There are, for those who choose to look for them, a number of examples of boxing looking out for its own in times of need, yet still one wonders if the sport should do more, writes Kieran Mulvaney

Even with fewer categories this year, three previous honorees are in the hunt to repeat in the year-end awards. Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, Eddy Reynoso and Keith Connolly are among the 2019 year-end recipients who have made their way back to the ballot among the nominees announced for the 2020 Boxing Writers Associations of America (BWAA) awards. Just five categories will be featured for this year’s awards, with the list of nominees formally announced by the organization on Monday.

American boxer Terrel Williams, the final last opponent of Prichard Colon, will return to the ring on November 18. For Williams, it will be his first fight since October 17, 2015, when he scored a controversial victory over Colon in Fairfax, Virginia. Williams got the win after Colon was issued a disqualification in ninth round. Colon's corner got confused with the number of remaining rounds and thought the fight was over, but the tenth round was still remaining. Because they began to take off Colon's gloves, he was disqualified by the referee.

The family of brain-damaged boxer Prichard Colon filed a $50 million lawsuit Wednesday against a ringside physician and the co-promoters of the card on which he was injured a year-and-a-half ago in Fairfax, Virginia. According to a story posted on ESPN.com, the suit was filed in the District of Columbia on Wednesday against Dr. Richard Ashby and co-promoters HeadBangers Boxing and DiBella Entertainment to help pay for the extremely expensive care Colon requires. Ashby was the ringside physician assigned to the October 17, 2015, bout by the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, which supervises boxing in that state.

On Monday morning, an ugly rumor broke out on the social networks about the passing of welterweight contender Prichard Colon. However, his father Richard Colón told Primera Hora that the young 24-year-old is still in the process of rehabilitation in the hope that he will be able to emerge from the coma that he's been in since October 2015.

The boxing community and the World Boxing Council feel sorrow for the health status of Prichard Colon, aged 23, who registers one hundred days in a coma since his fight with Terrell Williams, last October 17 at the Eagle Bank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia.

An investigation by the Regulatory Department of Professions and Occupations (DPOR) for the state of Virginia have exonerated referee Joe Cooper, ringside doctor Richard Ashby and fighter Terrel Williams from having any responsibility in connection to the serious injuries suffered by Prichard Colon during his bout with Williams last October.

On the eve of his 43rd birthday, former three division world champion Felix 'Tito' Trinidad made a special visit in Atlanta. The 'people's champion' of Puerto Rico made a surprise to visit to Prichard Colón, the young welterweight who has been in a coma since last October after losing a fight against Terrell Williams in Virginia.

Welterweight Prichard Colon (16-1, 13KOs) is now breathing without the assistance of machines, according to a statement from his family. Colon was badly injured during his October 17th bout with Terrel Williams in Fairfax, Virginia.
