Chagaev Admits Defeat, Lays His Praise on Povetkin

Former world champion Ruslan Chagaev is not making any excuses about Saturday's unanimous decision loss to Alexander Povetkin in Germany. With the victory, Povetkin captured the WBA's vacant "regular" title at heavyweight. Chagaev did well in the fight, hurting Povetkin with hard left hands in the sixth and seventh rounds. Chagaev will rest, regroup and then he wants his promoter, Universum, to line up several dates. He wants to stay very active.

By Cliff Rold - Put aside the phony belt on the line in the main event. It’s total nonsense. There is only one true Heavyweight Champion. His name is Wladimir Klitschko. The next man down the chain is his brother Vitali. Alexander Povetkin? He’s the guy who twice got into position to be a sanctioning body mandatory for Wladimir and wasn’t ready to pull the trigger. Apparently, his camp sees value in paying WBA sanctioning fees so someone will call them champ while trudging along the path of least resistance. Funny thing though…Povetkin’s path of least resistance also works out to be, on paper, potentially the toughest fight of his career. Atlas Brushes Off Any Talk of Povetkin vs Klitschko Clash

A new champion was crown on Saturday night in Erfurt, Germany, when Alexander Povetkin (22-0, 15KOs) won a unanimous twelve round decision over Ruslan Chagaev to claim the WBA's vacant "regular" heavyweight title. Wladimir Klitschko is the WBA's "super champion" at heavyweight, and he also holds the IBO/IBF/WBO titles. With the victory Povetkin becomes the WBA's mandatory challenger to Klitschko, but the Russian boxer's trainer, Teddy Atlas, brushed off any and all questions regarding a Klitschko-Povetkin clash in the near future.

Emanuel Steward, trainer of WBO/IBO/WBA/IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, is not happy with today's bout in Germany between Alexander Povetkin and Ruslan Chagaev. The two Eastern Euro boxers will clash for the WBA's vacant "regular" heavyweight title.

After losing a decision to Wladimir KLitschko in April, Haye has not made a decision on whether or not he will continue his career. This weights are in for Saturday's big heavyweight doubleheader in Erfurt, Germany. In a fight for the vacant WBA "regular" title, Ruslan Chagaev (27-1-1, 17 KOs) and Alexander Alexander Povetkin (21-0, 15 KOs) weighed exactly the same - 105 kilograms [231-pounds]. Former champion Evander Holyfield (44-10-2, 29 KOs) was present at the weighin and wants to fight the winner. In the other big heavyweight clash, undefeated Robert Helenius (15-0, 10KOs) was 243.6-pounds, while former WBO champion Sergei Liakhovich (25-3, 16KOs) was 232-pounds.

Four-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, 48-years-old, is trying to secure the winner of Saturday's fight between Alexander Povetkin and Ruslan Chagaev, who battle for the WBA's "regular" heavyweight title in Germany. Holyfield told German reporter Georg Ebro that he recently held a meeting in Germany with Povetkin's promoter Kalle Sauerland to discuss the possibility of facing Povetkin, if he wins the fight.
